MaryAnn's 3-60-1 Update Page
3 Days~~~60 Miles~~~1 Cause
Welcome!!! October 11-13, 2002 will be a challenging and exciting weekend for me. I will be walking in the Avon 3-Day for breast cancer--a 60 mile walk from Bear Mountain State Park to Manhattan to raise awareness for research and early detection programs. Why am I doing this? The reason is simple. My mother, Mickey, and my grandmothers, Marion and Anne, all battled breast cancer---and won. Odds are I will almost certainly face this disease myself at some point in my life. My hope is that should that time come, advances in detection and treatment will lessen the threat. An even greater hope is that when my daughter is older, the disease will be eradicated completely. A new case of breast cancer will be diagnosed every 3 minutes in America. Every 13 minutes, breast cancer will claim another life. With early detection, however, the 5 year survival rate is 96% (Mom just celebrated 6 years cancer-free this past March!) |
